What is a 58mm portafilter?

A portafilter is one of the most important tools in your at-home coffee routine. That’s why every espresso machine comes with one by default.

But not all portafilters are created equal, and that’s why many home baristas eventually go looking for an upgrade.

Some prefer the classic version with a double spout. Others go for a bottomless portafilter to double-check their extraction and snap some great shots for Instagram.

Either way, we’ve got you covered. Read more below about our portafilter offerings for many different E61 machines.

Which machines use a 58mm portafilter?

For many espresso machines, 58mm is the standard group head size. It was first introduced by Faema in 1961 and is still widely used in premium home and commercial machines.

Popular 58mm-compatible machines include Expobar, La Marzocco, Rocket, Rancilio, Lelit, and Flair.

Want to be 100% sure that your machine is compatible with our 58mm portafilters? Check our size chart for more machine matches.

Pro tip: If you’re using a 58mm portafilter, your other tools (tamper, distributor, puck screen) should be 58.5mm to fit perfectly.

Benefits of a 58mm portafilter

A 58mm portafilter generally delivers the best (i.e. most even) espresso extraction of all sizes, which is one reason it’s the industry standard for higher-end machines.

The wider diameter means your coffee puck is lower in height, making it easier to extract precisely and evenly.

However, a larger surface also increases the risk of channeling (uneven flow through the puck) so your prep needs to be spot on. With the right tools and technique, though, a 58mm portafilter can help you make amazing espressos, cappuccinos or flat whites right at home.

Bottomless portafilter or double spout?

We offer two types of 58mm portafilters for your machine. Not sure which one to choose? Here’s a quick overview:

1. Double spout portafilter

This is the standard version that comes with most machines – and it’s the one you’ll often see in cafés.

For daily use, a double spout portafilter is super practical. It allows you to split your double shot into two singles.

Tip: Use cups that aren’t too tall – otherwise, things might get messy. Our barista cups fit perfectly between your portafilter and coffee scale.

2. Bottomless portafilter

Also called a “naked” portafilter, this one has no spout underneath; the bottom is fully open.

You’ll see the espresso flow straight from the portafilter basket, which helps you spot any tamping or distribution issues immediately.

Example: if espresso starts flowing from one side but not the other, your puck probably wasn’t level.

FAQ

Read the answers to our most frequently received questions below:

Will a 58mm portafilter fit my machine?

If your espresso machine has an E61 group head, chances are high our 58mm portafilter will fit.

For bottomless versions, it depends on the group head design. That’s why we’ve created four versions – each tailored to different machines.

What’s the difference between 51mm, 54mm, and 58mm portafilters?

51mm and 54mm portafilters are common in the home barista world, especially for espresso machines made by De’Longhi and Sage.

Even with a smaller group head, you can still make amazing espresso, as long as you use the right tools and follow a solid recipe.

That’s why we design barista tools for every size, from 51mm to 58mm.

What size tamper for a 58mm portafilter?

We sell matching barista accessories that fit perfectly with your 58mm portafilter, also designed in-house.

If you’re looking for a tamper to go with your 58mm portafilter, we recommend using our 58,5mm version. This ensures a perfect fit of the tamper in your portafilter.

We also sell 58mm tampers, but only recommend using those for certain Quick Mill machines.
