In this blog, you’ll read what to look out for when using a knock box and get tips on how to enjoy yours for as long as possible.
What is a knock box?
Even though knock boxes have a simple function, they come in many different shapes and materials (plastic, wood, stainless steel).
They all feature a rubber knock bar, which you use to tap out your portafilter. The rubber ensures your portafilter won’t get damaged and also helps reduce the noise when knocking out the puck.
When looking for a knock box, make sure it’s sturdy and easy to clean.
How do you use a knock box?
After pulling the perfect shot of espresso, you’ll have a neat used coffee puck in your portafilter. Simply knock the puck out against the rubber knock bar.
There’s no need to hit too hard: one or two firm hits is usually enough to get the puck into the knock box.
It’s smart to place the knock box right next to your machine so you don’t have to walk across the kitchen to empty your portafilter.
One thing to keep in mind: If you’re using a smaller, lighter knock box, for example one made of plastic, it’s often best to hold it steady while knocking so you don’t accidentally knock (ha - ha) it over.
Benefits of a Coffee Knock Box
Below we’ve listed the main benefits of using a knock box.
A convenient way to dispose of coffee grounds
This one speaks for itself. Back in my early home-barista days, my trash bin took quite a beating after every espresso. The result was coffee splattered on the wall and down the sides of the bin (and eventually, a new bin).
A knock box saves you a lot of mess and a new trash can.
Easy to clean
It’s super easy to empty the knock box and just pop it in the dishwasher.
Cleaning by hand is just as simple: remove the rubber knock bar, add a little water and dish soap, and you’re done in a minute.
Saves time
If you own an espresso machine, you know the pressure when guests are waiting for their coffee.
No more running back and forth to the trash can, just one or two quick taps and you’re ready for the next espresso!
Perfect for compost or a grow kit
Did you know mushrooms love your used coffee grounds? With a grow kit, you can grow your own delicious mushrooms using coffee pucks. Plus, coffee grounds are perfect for compost since they’re rich in nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, magnesium, and copper.
Compost with coffee works great for growing carrots, pumpkins, and tomatoes. We may know more about coffee than gardening, but with a little research, you can absolutely give your used coffee a second life!
