Portafilters
A good portafilter is essential for brewing a delicious and well-balanced espresso. Ours come with a solid stainless steel head and are available in 51mm, 54mm, and 58mm sizes.
What is a portafilter?
A portafilter is a key part of your espresso machine. It’s also known as a filter holder or group handle.
It holds the basket filled with ground coffee and locks into your machine.
It has three parts: the handle, the head where the basket fits, and the basket itself.
Our double spout and bottomless portafilters come with an 18g non-pressurized basket as standard.
Types of portafilters
We sell two types of portafilters:
- Double spout portafilter
Just like it sounds, it has two spouts at the bottom. So you’ll need a wide cup or two smaller cups to catch the espresso.
You always pull a double shot when using a double spout portafilter.
Our cappuccino cups and latte cups fit perfectly underneath. Using a single espresso cup? You can catch the second stream in a stainless steel espresso pitcher.
- Bottomless portafilter (naked portafilter)
A bottomless portafilter has no spout underneath. The coffee flows straight from the basket.
The advantage? You can see exactly what’s happening during extraction when you use a bottomless portafilter, meaning you’ll spot uneven tamping or channeling right away.
Which size do I need?
Here are the three most common sizes:
51mm portafilter
Our smallest size. Suitable for De’Longhi and SMEG machines.
Make sure to check your exact model first—not all machines fit our portafilters.
54mm portafilter
Designed for Sage, Solis, and Breville machines like the Barista Express, Impress, Pro, or Bambino.
This is a solid upgrade if you’re using a 54mm portafilter. Available in both double spout and bottomless versions.
58mm portafilter
Many machines with an E61 group head use 58mm portafilters. Think Expobar, Rancilio, Rocket, Flair, Bellezza, La Marzocco.
We offer both plastic and rosewood handles—and four bottomless models in this size.

What to look for when choosing a portafilter
Size
Getting the right fit is key. Too big and it might damage your group head.
Too small and you’ll lose pressure.
We sell 51mm, 54mm, and 58mm sizes. Always check our size guide to be sure.
Type
Choose between a double spout or bottomless portafilter.
Both brew a great double shot, but:
- A double spout lets you split your espresso into two cups.
- A bottomless portafilter shows you exactly what’s going on, great for learning and troubleshooting.
Material & finish
Always go for stainless steel, as it heats quickly and stays warm. That means better temperature control during extraction.
Tip: Warm up your portafilter before brewing. Machines like Sage or De’Longhi may need a bit of help: just run some hot water through the machine with your portafilter locked in first.
Choose a sturdy plastic or elegant wood handle. Rosewood adds a unique look.
Ease of use & cleaning
Make sure the portafilter you use has a removable head so it’s easy to soak in cleaning solution or to put in the dishwasher.
We recommend our Cafetto espresso machine cleaner.
Barista Essentials portafilters
We design most of our tools ourselves, so we know exactly what matters to fellow home baristas shopping for new espresso tools.
Our portafilters offer:
- A detachable handle for easy cleaning or replacing
- Strong plastic or unique rosewood handles, each one slightly different
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a regular and a bottomless portafilter?
A bottomless portafilter (also called naked or open) lets you watch your espresso flow straight from the basket.
It’s beautiful to see and useful too. You can spot mistakes like uneven tamping or channeling.
A regular portafilter’s big plus? You brew two cups at once. Perfect if you’ve got coffee-loving friends around.
Does every portafilter fit every espresso machine?
Nope. Portafilters come in different sizes, and not every machine has the same group head.
Most common sizes are: 51mm (De’Longhi), 54mm (Sage), 58mm (E61 machines).
Always double check your size before ordering, as it needs to lock snugly into your machine to work properly.
How do you clean a portafilter?
Wipe down your portafilter after every shot, using a barista cloth.
Don’t rinse, as water might stay behind and mess with your next shot.
Once a week, when backflushing, take apart the portafilter and soak the head and basket in cleaning solution.
The metal parts are dishwasher safe, but always hand-wash wooden handles.
And use a knock box, not your trash can, to keep it clean between uses.
Which portafilter do I need for my machine?
Here’s a quick guide:
- 51mm: Fits De’Longhi and SMEG (not La Specialista)
- 54mm: Fits Sage Barista Express, Touch, Bambino Plus, Solis Grind & Infuse Pro, and more
- 58mm: Fits E61 machines like Expobar, ECM, Rocket, Rancilio, VBM

What is channeling, and why does it matter?
Channeling means water flows unevenly through your puck, causing sour or weak espresso.
It’s often caused by uneven tamping or clumps in your grind. Use products like a WDT tool or distributor to help prevent it.
Why choose a metal portafilter?
We only use stainless steel in our heads and baskets, no plastic inserts.
Plastic inlays trap old coffee and oil. Not great for taste or hygiene.
Our all-metal design is cleaner and more durable.
We even sell a stainless steel blind filter that lasts way longer than those that call themselves blind filters. Just saying…
Why don’t you sell single shot portafilters?
Single baskets sound useful, but we absolutely don’t recommend them.
They taper inwards, which means:
- Your tamper won’t fit properly
- The small base leads to over-extraction on the edges (hello, sour espresso)
That’s why we always suggest brewing a double shot. It gives you way more control. We promise you’ll taste the difference.
