The importance of distributing before tamping

When I (Jasper) was just starting out as a home barista, my coffee turned out different every time. This meant a happy surprise some of the time, but other times (okay... most times) a sour espresso.

Makes sense, considering that my puck prep was also far from consistent, using the standard DeLonghi tamper as an all-purpose barista tool. Not anymore.

There are a lot of tools that help you get your coffee into your filter basket more neatly: from a classic coffee distributor to a WDT tool. But where was I supposed to put all of that in my small coffee corner?

A tamper & distributor combination tool was the answer for me. It helped me noticeably improve my espresso and saved space around my machine.
