How does a coffee tamping station help you make better coffee?

It’s frustrating when you do everything you can to brew a great espresso, yet every extraction still turns out differently. When I started as a home barista, I (Hugo) had no idea that uneven tamping could be the cause.

If you place your portafilter on the countertop—or even on a tamping mat—nothing really stops it from moving while tamping.

Uneven tamping causes water to flow through the puck at different speeds. This directly affects the balance of flavours in your espresso. That’s where a tamping station comes in.

Check if your portafilter fits

Not all portafilters work equally well with this tamping station.

Do you use a Barista-Essentials portafilter or a bottomless portafilter? Then this tamping station will work perfectly, regardless of size.

If you use an original De’Longhi or Sage portafilter, there isn’t enough clearance to place it straight into the station. In that case, you can still use the tamping station by inserting the portafilter sideways.
