Iced Americano Recipe

Follow the steps below to make your own refreshing iced americano at home. (and which is even tastier than at Starbucks)

Requirements:

  • 36 gr Espresso, a double shot
  • Ice cubes (until your glass is at least 2/3 full)
  • Approx. 70 ml cold water (filtered or spring water)

Optional: you can add sugar or a syrup to taste. Some people drink it with a little milk.

How to:

1. Make your double espresso as you always do

2. Set it aside.

3. Put the ice cubes and water in a glass.

To start, you can use a ratio of 1 part espresso and 2 parts water.

If you use small ice cubes, use 1 part water, as the ice cubes will melt quickly,

4. Pour your espresso over the ice and water.

5. Done! Enjoy your iced americano.

You can of course play around with the proportions. Add more water if you find it too strong, or substitute (e.g. sparkling water, or orange juice to make an iced americano sunrise).

Tips for an even better iced americano

Use the tips below to refine your iced americano to perfection:

Use bigger ice cubes

Preferably, use large ice cubes when making an iced americano. This is because they melt less quickly and keep all the flavours balanced for longer.

If you use small ice cubes, use lots of them. At least 2/3 of your glass should be filled with ice.

Prefer no ice at all? Then put your glass in the freezer beforehand.

Play with your proportions

You can vary endlessly with your iced americano until you find the perfect proportions. Use less water or less espresso, or choose a different type of water.

Tip: With sparkling water, an iced americano is also very refreshing!

Change it up: Espresso and orange juice

Looking for a sweet variation on an iced americano? Then an orange juice espresso is just the thing for you!

This coffee drink is just as easy to make as an iced americano, you just replace the water with orange juice.

Slowly pour the espresso into your glass with orange juice and water for that nice drip effect.

Hot americano recipe

Prefer a hot americano in which your espresso still shines? Fortunately, a hot americano is also easy to make.

A good americano has a ratio of 2 parts hot water to 1 part espresso.

Always pour the hot water into your americano cup first and then the espresso. This way, you make sure your cup is well warm and your crema is preserved.

Iced americano vs. Cold brew

Iced americano is often confused with cold brew. This is understandable because they look similar. Yet there is a substantial difference between the two coffee drinks.

As you have read, you make an iced americano by pouring fresh espresso on cold water with ice cubes. A cold brew, on the other hand, is made by steeping coarsely ground coffee beans in cold water for a long time.

Iced americanos generally have a stronger flavour than cold brew.
