In this blog, you’ll discover everything about the coffee dosing funnel, an essential home barista tool.

This tool decreases spillage of coffee grounds and gives more consistency in return. A real win-win, in that way.

The basics of the Dosing Funnel

The dosing funnel is a simple but practical accessory for any home barista. Besides reducing waste of your precious, fresh specialty coffee, it also helps keep your countertop clean.

Placing a dosing funnel on your portafilter creates a barrier that prevents coffee grounds from spilling over the edges.

Our dosing funnels are equipped with magnets (58mm, 51mm) or can be screwed onto the portafilter (54mm) to keep them securely in place while grinding, That’s much more convienient.

The right dosing funnel for your espresso machine

It’s important to choose the right dosing funnel for your espresso machine. We’ve created a handy size guide to help you see which funnel fits which portafilter.

  • Dosing funnel 51mm: Fits many DeLonghi espresso machines, such as DeLonghi Dedica
  • Dosing funnel 53mm: Suitable as a Sage dosing funnel. Also works with many Solis and Breville machines

Do you have a 51mm or 54mm Sage, Solis or Breville espresso machine with a built in grinder?

Choose our special Sage dosing funnel instead. Thanks to the activation tab and unique wings, it works perfectly with te built-in grinder.

  • Dosing funnel 58mm: This size is compatible with machines featuring an E61 brew group, such as ECM, Expobar, La Marzocco, and Gaggia. You can also use it with a 58mm Sage espresso machine, but you’ll need to activate the built-in grinder manually.

How to use a dosing funnel

Our Barista Essentials dosing funnel has magnets the let you easily click it onto your portafilter. You can then hold it under your grinder to dose coffee neatly and without mess.

If you’ve purchased a Barista Essentials dosing funnel for use with your Sage espresso machine (with built-in grinder), you can also use this funnel, but you’ll need to activate the grinder manually while holding the portafilter underneath. Alternatively, our special Sage dosing funnel is designed to work seamlessly with the built-in grinder.

After grinding your beans, you’ll often see the coffee piled up in the portafilter.

To prevent it from spilling over the edge when you remove the dosing funnel, it’s important to tap the portafilter a few times on the tamping mat or with the palm of your hand. This helps distribute the grounds more evenly.

We recommend keeping the dosing funnel attached while using your WDT tool.

When using your distributor and tamper, it’s best to take the dosing funnel off the portafilter.
