What is a 54mm portafilter?

The portafilter is the barista tool you lock into your machine, it’s what holds the basket with your coffee puck and where the hot water flows through.

When should you choose a 54mm portafilter?

If you own a Breville, Solis, or Sage machine and want to upgrade or expand your barista toolkit, getting a new portafilter is a smart move.

You might think: “But don’t I already get a portafilter with my machine?” And you would be right. But you’ll be surprised how much better a good-quality portafilter makes your espresso taste, compared to the standard ones, like those that come with a Sage Barista Express.

Many standard portafilters include cheap plastic parts, from the handle to the inlay between the basket and the spout. Coffee residues easily get stuck in there, which can lead to poor hygiene and an off taste.

Curious to try a 54mm bottomless portafilter instead of your standard one? For that, you’re also in the right place.

Benefits of a 54mm portafilter

It’s important to use a portafilter that fits your machine just right. If it’s too tight, you might damage your group head. Not tight enough, and you’ll lose pressure plus any chance of a good extraction.

That’s why we developed portafilters specifically for Sage, Solis, and Breville machines with a 54mm group head. They lock in securely and help you make your tastiest coffee at home.

Size-wise, 54mm sits right between the smaller 51mm and larger 58mm portafilter options.

Generally speaking, a larger portafilter gives you more room for even extraction. But don’t worry, with the right prep and tools, you can absolutely brew amazing espresso with a 54mm portafilter.

Types of 54mm portafilters

You can choose between two types of 54mm portafilters:

  1. Double spout portafilter

This classic version has two spouts underneath so you can easily split a double shot into two singles. With this portafilter, you always brew a double espresso.

Need the perfect cups to go underneath? Our barista cups are designed to fit neatly under your portafilter and on your coffee scale.

  1. Bottomless portafilter

The bottomless (or naked) portafilter has no spout at all, it leaves the bottom of the portafilter basket exposed. You’ve probably seen them in those eye-catching Instagram videos.

Beyond just looking great, a naked portafilter is a powerful tool for diagnosing your puck prep. If your tamp is off-center, you’ll see the espresso flow unevenly. A spouted portafilter hides these issues, a bottomless one shows them.

If you use a Sage, Solis, Breville, or Gastroback machine, there’s a good chance it will. But to be sure, you can always check our size guide.

You’ll also find the matching tamper, distributor, and puck screen sizes there.

What’s the difference between 51mm, 54mm, and 58mm?

It depends on your machine:

  • For De’Longhi a 51mm portafilter is most common.
  • Most Sage, Solis, and Breville models use a 54mm portafilter.
  • E61 machines like Rocket, Rancilio, and La Marzocco use a 58mm portafilter.

What size tamper for a 54mm portafilter?
