So you’ve bought yourself Sage espresso machine, yet after using it a few times it turns out you’re missing some essential Sage accessories. But where do you start?

In this blog, we’ll show you the 8 accessories you need to get the most out of your Sage, in the exact right size for your machine.

Top 8 Sage accessories

1. Dosing funnel

If you have a Sage with a built-in grinder, a dosing ring is a huge relief.

It’s a surprise these things don’t come with the machine, given how much of an essential they are.

Our dosing ring is custom-made for Sage, Solis and Breville machines and features a tab that activates the grinder, the same way your portafilter would.

2. Tamping mat

Making a good espresso is all about precision and consistency.

A common problem when tamping coffee is that the portafilter shifts, resulting in uneven extraction. This is where a tamping mat comes in.

A tamping mat ensures a stable tamping experience and, with that, a better extraction. It also protects your countertop.

3. Coffee scale

A coffee scale is a necessary tool on the way to barista-style coffee at home using your Sage espressomachine.

With a coffee scale, you can weigh how much ground coffee you use, how much espresso you get out of it and in what time. A good ratio is 19 grams in, 40 grams espresso out, in 25 to 30 seconds.

4. Tamper

Your tamper is an important part of making a good espresso, but tamping is also a skill that usually requires some time and practice.

The plastic tamper that comes with the Sage leaves a lot to be desired in this regard.

When using the included Sage tamper, constent tamping is very difficult. Preferably, you should use a solid tamper with some weight.

5. Leveler

The importance of properly distributing the coffee in your portafilter is often underestimated.

Coffee falls into the portafilter, when you would tap it directly without distribution you create channelling.

Channelling is the result of water under pressure finding the weakest spots in your coffee and entering your glass via that route. The result is weak and sour coffee due to irregular extraction.

Our advice is to use a coffee divider for Sage before you start tamping to ensure your coffee is always evenly distributed. This helps to ensure an even consistency of your coffee puck, allowing the water to flow through it evenly, thus getting the most out of each shot.

6. Puck screen

A simple but effective Sage accessory is the Puck Screen.

A puck screen ensures that the water from your Sage moves through your coffee puck at an even pressure and distribution.

This improves the taste of your coffee and keeps your brewing group clean.

Place the puck screen in your portafilter after dividing and tamping, brew your espresso and rinse the puck screen after use.

7. Naked portafilter

A naked portafilter is exactly what it sounds like: a portafilter with the bottom removed.

The extraction that takes place while making an espresso is exactly the same with a closed and open portafilter. However, with the naked portafilter, you can see exactly the extraction process at the bottom.

Apart from giving an impressive view, the naked portafilter also has a function. When you can see the extraction, you can diagnose any extraction problems you might have, such as channelling which often causes a lot of splashing.

This makes a naked portafilter a fun and useful Sage accessory.

8. Knock box

When you have extracted a good shot of espresso from your Sage espresso machine, you need somewhere to put the used coffee puck.

That’s what a Sage knock-out box or knock-out drawer is for.

Summary

In this blog we’ve highlighted the 8 Sage accessories that you can’t go without.

These tools help you make a consistent, balanced espresso and also keep your machine clean.

With the right tools and accessories, you can get the most out of your Sage espressomachine. Good luck brewing!
